Trek through ancient mist-draped forest to spend a privileged, permitted hour with a wild mountain gorilla family — one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth and a true once-in-a-lifetime moment. Only 8 permits are issued per gorilla group per day.
What to expect
You set off at first light with a small group, armed guides, and a UWA ranger through dense primary rainforest, guided by trackers who located the family at dawn. When you find them — a silverback resting, infants tumbling, mothers grooming — the world stops. The permitted hour passes in awed silence punctuated only by the forest and the deep chest-rumbles of the male. The descent feels lighter, as if you've left something of yourself in the forest. A certificate marks the achievement.
Good to know
Gorilla permits must be secured directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a licensed operator months in advance — they sell out quickly. This excursion requires a full day and significant overland transfer; confirm feasibility with your port schedule before committing.
