Slip a sea kayak into the glacier-chilled waters of Disenchantment Bay and paddle through drifting brash ice toward the calving face — a human-powered, almost meditative encounter with one of the planet's last great tidewater glaciers.
What to expect
Your certified sea-kayak guide fits you with a dry suit and paddle jacket before launching from a support vessel positioned near the ice margin. The group paddles at a leisurely pace through ice-choked waters, pausing to watch harbour seals perched on bergy bits. The guide points out ice formations — arches, caves, and pressure ridges — and explains how the glacier has advanced more than two miles in the past decade, uniquely bucking global trends. After the paddle, hot soup and locally baked bread are served aboard the support vessel. Total time on water: approximately 90 minutes.
