What to expect
The reserve is dense with white rhino, elephant, leopard, lion, and buffalo — the original Big Five territory, barely changed since the 19th century. As the sun sinks, the savannah turns amber and the animals move toward their evening waterholes — peak photographic light at peak activity. Durban port to Hluhluwe is approximately 2.5 hours each way — this excursion suits itineraries with a full port day (minimum 10 hours). Confirm all-aboard time before booking and factor in the return drive. Private transfer from port can be arranged through the lodge. Book 4–6 weeks ahead.
