What to expect
Your guide meets you at the San Gervasio entrance and leads a 90-minute walk through jungle-flanked sacbéob (white roads) connecting a series of ceremonial plazas and temples dating from 300 to 1500 CE. The site is blessedly uncrowded compared to mainland ruins, and coatimundi and tropical birds accompany you between temples. The guide contextualises each structure — from the oracle house of Ixchel to the market arcade — with stories drawn from codices and modern excavation. The intimacy of the jungle setting makes it genuinely haunting.

San Gervasio is a 20-minute taxi ride from the Cozumel cruise pier (approx. USD 10–15 each way). A certified local guide must be hired separately at or before the entrance — arrange in advance via a Cozumel guide association for the best specialists. Wear light, breathable clothing and insect repellent. Allow 3–4 hours total including transit.
