Escape into Tangier's extraordinary secret: a lush, wild cork-oak and eucalyptus forest reserve tumbling down to the Strait of Gibraltar, teeming with Barbary macaques and rare birds. A refined, private nature experience far from the port crowds.
What to expect
Just 5 km from the port, Parc Perdicaris (rated 4.5 on Tripadvisor) is a hauntingly beautiful nature reserve protecting a rare Atlantic forest of cork oak, wild olive, and giant cacti, home to Barbary macaques, Egyptian mongooses, and over 100 bird species. Your private guide leads you along shaded forest trails to dramatic clifftop viewpoints over the Strait, recounting the extraordinary 1904 Perdicaris kidnapping that brought US gunboats to Tangier. A luxury Moroccan picnic — pastilla, fresh fruit, Moroccan pastries, and mint tea — is laid out in a forest clearing, making this a sensory counterpoint to the city's intensity. Easily combined with Cap Spartel, just 3 km further west.
Good to know
Park entry is approx. MAD 20 per person; a private guide is essential to find the best viewpoints and wildlife spots. Best visited in the morning for birdwatching. A half-day excursion (3–4 hours) easily combined with Cap Spartel and Hercules Caves for a superb full coastal morning. Wear closed walking shoes; forest paths can be uneven. Advance booking essential.
