Secret Lava Tube Caving: Underground Iceland with Expert Geologists

Descend into Vatnshellir, one of Iceland's most spectacular lava tubes — an 8,000-year-old volcanic tunnel of glittering crystal formations and eerie silence. A genuinely rare underground world.

What to expect

Helmets and headlamps on, you descend 35 metres through a lava tube formed when the outer shell of a flowing lava river cooled and hardened while molten rock continued underground. Walls shimmer with lava stalactites, shelly pahoehoe formations, and mineral crusts in copper and ochre. Your geologist guide explains the volcanic event that created this labyrinth while the temperature holds at a constant 4°C — an almost meditative contrast to Iceland's windswept surface. The final chamber is breathtakingly vast.
