Nara Private Safari: Ancient Deer Park, Tōdai-ji & Sake Tasting

Wander among over 1,000 freely roaming sacred deer in Japan's ancient capital, stand inside the world's largest wooden building housing a colossal bronze Buddha, and close the day with a curated sake tasting. Nara is utterly unlike anywhere on earth.

What to expect

Departing Osaka or Kobe by private car, you arrive at Nara Park as morning mist softens the landscape and the deer — considered divine messengers — approach fearlessly for shika-senbei rice crackers. Your guide brings the 8th-century history of Tōdai-ji to life before the scale of the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) — 15 metres of bronze serenity — leaves you speechless. A tucked-away sake brewery near the old town rounds out the day with a guided tasting of Nara's celebrated junmai varieties.

Good to know

Accessible from Osaka (45 min) or Kobe (60 min). Bring a light layer — the park is forested and cooler in the shade. Deer bow back if you bow first; shika-senbei sold at park entrances (JPY 200 per bundle).
