Arctic Kayaking: Paddling the Cumberland Sound Fjords

Slip a sea kayak into the glassy waters flanking Lady Franklin Island and paddle among drifting icebergs, beneath nesting seabird cliffs, and past breaching bowhead whales. A sublime slow-travel perspective no motor vessel can replicate.

What to expect

After a brief equipment and safety briefing on the ship's swim platform, you lower into a stable double or single sea kayak and push off into the silence. The absence of engine noise transforms the experience: ice groans, seabirds cry, and the occasional explosive breath of a surfacing bowhead rings across the water. Your guide sets a gentle pace, pointing out growlers and bergy bits to navigate around. The paddle typically runs two hours, ending with a thermos of hot chocolate back aboard.
