Leirvik Lighthouse (Fyrstasjon) & Coastal Headlands Walk

Hike to the iconic Leirvik Fyrstasjon lighthouse perched on a wild coastal headland, where uninterrupted North Sea panoramas and resident seabirds make every frame a masterpiece. A true Norwegian postcard, earned on foot.

What to expect

The trail winds through coastal heather and maritime scrub before the lighthouse tower emerges dramatically against the sky above the sea cliffs. Your guide identifies nesting fulmars, shags, and — in season — puffins on the rocky outcrops below, and explains the lighthouse's pivotal role in guiding Norse trading routes across the centuries. The summit views stretch across dozens of islands dissolving into silver water, and on clear days you can trace the outline of distant mountain ranges. The walk is moderate (approx. 3–4 km round trip) and exhilaratingly elemental — saltwind, wildflowers, and an empty horizon.

Good to know

Allow 2–3 hrs including travel from pier. Wear sturdy walking shoes and a wind layer even in summer. The lighthouse exterior is always accessible; arrange a local naturalist guide through Visit Stord for expert seabird commentary. Confirm return time against your all-aboard.
