Grettislaug: Private Soak in a Viking-Age Hot Spring

Slip into the legendary seaside geothermal pools at Grettislaug, where saga hero Grettir reputedly swam ashore after crossing Skagafjörður. With only a handful of guests at a time, this is Iceland's most intimate and storied natural bathing experience.

What to expect

Two circular stone pools, heated naturally to around 39–42 °C, perch at the very edge of the Skagafjörður shoreline. Steam rises against the mountain backdrop as waves crash just metres away. The farm caretaker shares the Grettis Saga legend in intimate detail. Sunrise and late-evening Arctic light transform the setting into something otherworldly.

Good to know

Grettislaug is ~25 km north of Sauðárkrókur (approx. 30-min drive via Route 748); arrange a private transfer or rental car. Open year-round; no advance booking required for the pool entry itself, but a private transfer should be pre-arranged. Allow 1.5–2 hrs total. Changing facilities on-site are basic — pack a dry bag.
