Stroll the perfectly preserved early-20th-century streetscape of Mojiko Retro — the former Moji Customs House, the elegant old station, the Blue Wing Bridge — then sit down to Moji's most iconic dish: the legendary baked curry, born right here in this port town.
What to expect
The Mojiko Retro district is a living open-air museum of Meiji-era (late 19th–early 20th century) Western-influenced Japanese architecture, meticulously maintained and remarkably free of crowds. Highlights include the former Moji Customs House, the grand old Mojiko Station (one of Japan's most beautiful), the former Moji Mitsui Club (where Albert Einstein once stayed), and the Blue Wing Moji bascule bridge. End at one of the neighbourhood's cult baked curry restaurants — a Moji invention now recognised across Japan — for a deeply satisfying, uniquely local lunch.
Good to know
The Retro district is a 5–10 minute walk from the pier. The 3-Facility Pass covering the Kanmon Strait Museum, the Retro Observation Gallery, and the Kaikyo Plaza is excellent value. Arrive early to beat any tour groups; the district is most atmospheric in the morning light.
