Stand beneath 1,000-year-old coastal redwoods — the tallest living things on Earth — in the cathedral silence of Muir Woods National Monument. A short drive from the port, it is one of California's most transcendent natural experiences.
What to expect
The drive north over the Golden Gate is spectacular in itself. Once inside the monument, a hushed canopy of 250-foot redwoods filters the light into something almost otherworldly. Your expert naturalist guide shares the ecology and cultural history of these ancient groves at a leisurely pace. The optional Dipsea Trail extension rewards the energetic with coastal ridgeline views over the Pacific.
Good to know
Timed-entry shuttle reservations for Muir Woods sell out months in advance — book immediately via recreation.gov or let your private guide arrange it. Allow 5–6 hours total from port. Not suitable for guests with serious mobility limitations on the trail extensions.
