Scale the limestone bluffs above Petit-Andely to walk the ramparts of Richard the Lionheart's 12th-century fortress. A private expert guide unlocks the military genius behind the walls — and the sweep of the Seine below is simply breathtaking.
What to expect
Your guide meets you dockside and leads the 20-minute uphill walk (or optional taxi to the base) to the château. You'll move through successive baileys, the keep, and the crumbling towers while your guide narrates the siege of 1204 that ended English rule in Normandy. The finale is a panoramic terrace above a sweeping bend in the Seine — one of the finest river views in all of France. Comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket are strongly advised.
Good to know
The climb takes roughly 30–40 minutes each way on a well-marked path; the full guided experience runs about 2.5 hours. Pre-book directly and confirm your ship's all-aboard time; most River Seine calls allow a comfortable half-day. Closed Tuesdays.
