Kyoto: Private Tea Ceremony with a Tea Master

A traditional tea ceremony conducted by a certified tea master in a centuries-old tearoom, an intimate ritual rarely opened to outside groups.

What to expect

You remove your shoes and kneel in a tatami room as the tea master explains each deliberate gesture of the ceremony. You're guided through preparing and drinking matcha, learning the etiquette and philosophy behind it. Seasonal wagashi sweets accompany the tea. The setting, a preserved wooden teahouse, adds to the sense of stepping back in time.

Good to know

Kyoto is roughly 1-1.5 hours from Kobe or Osaka cruise ports by car or train β€” factor in transit time carefully. Reserve at least a week in advance; sessions are capped at small numbers so slots fill quickly.
