Is the Santa Ana Air Museum Worth It?

The Lyon Air Museum is a compact, no-frills collection of historic military aircraft, presidential planes, and wartime artifacts housed in a 30,000-square-foot hangar right at John Wayne Airport. Expect to spend 60-90 minutes walking among nicely restored WWII fighters, a few presidential jets, and interactive exhibits on aviation history. It's clean, well-lit, and easy to navigate, but it's not enormous. Most visitors with a casual interest in planes find it worthwhile; hardcore enthusiasts will be happy but not blown away. The location makes it an easy add-on if you're already near the airport or in Orange County.

Best time to go is weekday mornings during spring or fall when crowds are light and temperatures are comfortable. Summer can be uncomfortably warm inside the hangar, and weekends get busier with families. Expect to pay around $15-25 per adult, with discounts for seniors, military, and kids; parking is separate and adds another $5-10 depending on duration. It's rarely a full-day commitment.

Tip: prioritize the outdoor aircraft display and the presidential plane if they're open that day; those are the highlights. You can comfortably skip the gift shop and the smaller indoor exhibits if you're short on time. Wear comfortable shoes since there's a fair amount of concrete walking, and bring earplugs if plane noise bothers you since the museum sits beside active runways.
