Anilao offers some of the closest decent snorkeling to Manila, about 2.5–3 hours away by road. Expect warm, clear water most of the year with healthy coral gardens, plenty of reef fish, occasional turtles, and the chance to see giant clams. It’s not remote Palawan-level visibility or megafauna, but it’s surprisingly good for a day trip. The standard experience involves three to four snorkel stops at marine sanctuaries, with lunch on the boat or at a simple beach. Crowds are moderate on weekdays; weekends get busier with local groups.
The best time is December to May when seas are calmer and visibility often exceeds 10–15 meters. June to November can still work but expect more rain, rougher boat rides, and reduced visibility from runoff. Expect to pay around $80–130 per person for a full-day tour including transport from Manila, gear, guide, and lunch. Private or semi-private trips sit at the higher end; joining a small shared group keeps it cheaper.
Tip: Choose a tour that visits at least three different sites and includes a marine sanctuary with healthy coral rather than one that spends time at a beach or “secret cove.” Skip the packaged lunch upgrade if you’re not fussy—standard Filipino fare on these trips is usually decent and plentiful. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and your own snorkel if you’re picky about fit.
