Buenos Aires Antique Markets: What to Know

The main antique scene happens every Sunday in San Telmo. Expect a long street market running down Defensa from Plaza Dorrego, packed with stalls selling old silver, vintage leather, mid-century furniture, vinyl records, and random bric-a-brac. It's lively but crowded, with tango musicians and street performers adding atmosphere. The indoor market hall nearby has more antiques under one roof, though it's smaller and pricier. Overall it's fun for browsing even if you buy nothing – just don't expect museum-quality pieces at every stall.

Best time is spring (October to December) when the weather is pleasant and crowds manageable. Go early on Sunday morning to avoid the worst heat and peak tourist rush. Expect to pay around $15-40 for small items like old postcards, silver mate gourds or glassware. Serious furniture or jewelry starts at several hundred dollars and goes up fast.

Pick up well-made vintage Argentine silver or leather goods – they're often good value. Skip the obvious tourist junk like mass-produced "antique" signs and overpriced tango souvenirs. Bargain politely but not aggressively; vendors expect it but hate rude haggling.
