The New Orleans aquarium is a solid half-day activity, especially if you have kids or want a break from the heat and crowds of the French Quarter. Expect a modern facility with a decent variety of marine life: a large Gulf of Mexico exhibit, sharks, sea turtles, a walk-through tunnel, and a touch pool with rays and small sharks. The attached insectarium adds butterflies, bugs, and a few hands-on stations. It’s clean, well-organized, and easy to walk through in 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace. Don’t expect it to be mind-blowing if you’ve visited major aquariums in other cities, but it’s perfectly pleasant for what it is.
Best time to visit is fall through spring (October–May). Summers are brutally hot and humid, and the place gets packed with families. Go early in the morning on a weekday to avoid lines at the touch pools. Expect to pay around $40–60 per adult for a combo ticket that includes both the aquarium and insectarium; kids are cheaper. Add a few dollars if you want the optional IMAX or behind-the-scenes tour.
Honest tips: Prioritize the shark and ray touch tank and the big Caribbean reef tunnel—they’re the highlights. Skip the insectarium if you’re short on time or not into bugs; it’s fine but feels like filler. Bring your own snacks if you’re on a budget—the on-site café is overpriced and average.
