Arthur's Seat Hike: What You Need to Know

Arthur's Seat is a 251-metre volcanic hill inside Holyrood Park offering the best panoramic view of Edinburgh. Expect a steep, rocky path that takes 45-90 minutes depending on your fitness and route. The summit gives you 360-degree views over the city, the Firth of Forth, and the Pentland Hills. It's a proper hike with uneven ground, some loose stones, and a few scrambly bits near the top. You'll share the trail with everyone from trail runners to families with small kids. The wind can be brutal once you're exposed on the ridge.

Best time is May to September when days are long and weather is most reliable, though Scottish weather is never guaranteed. Early morning or late afternoon avoids the worst crowds. Expect to pay around £0-60: completely free if you go solo, or £30-60 for a small-group guided hike. Sunset tours cost more but the light is worth it if the sky is clear.

Pick the route from the east side (Radical Road) if you want gentler gradients; skip the Salisbury Crags path if you're afraid of heights or have bad knees. Bring a windproof layer even on sunny days and wear proper shoes with grip – trainers are fine but sandals are a bad idea. Check the weather forecast right before you leave.
