Prague Astronomical Clock Tour: Worth It?

The astronomical clock itself is the star: every hour on the hour a small crowd gathers in Old Town Square to watch the 600-year-old mechanism come to life with apostles, a skeleton, and a rooster. If you join a tour that includes the Old Town Hall interior, you'll climb the tower for close-up views of the clockworks, see the inner courtyard, and get decent 360° views over the rooftops. The full experience usually lasts 60-90 minutes and combines the clock, a bit of Old Town history, and sometimes the underground medieval levels. It's genuinely interesting if you like mechanical history and don't mind small groups.

Best time is spring or autumn shoulder season when crowds are lighter; summer gets packed and hot inside the tower. Go for a morning slot (first tours after opening) to avoid the worst queues. Expect to pay around $25-45 per person depending on whether it's a basic clock-and-tower ticket or a longer guided walking tour that includes the Jewish Quarter and underground areas. Skip the paid evening "light show" add-ons; they're underwhelming. If you're short on time, just watch the hourly show from the square for free and only buy tickets for the tower if you want the views and mechanics explained.
