Ayutthaya is the most popular day trip from Bangkok for a reason: it's only about 80 km north and gives you a solid look at Thailand's history before Bangkok existed. Expect a full day (usually 7–11 hours) of temples, ruins, and photo stops. The main historical park is impressive—red-brick stupas, giant Buddha statues, and the famous tree-rooted head at Wat Mahathat—but it gets hot, crowded, and a bit repetitive after the third or fourth temple. Most people enjoy the first half of the day and feel templed-out by the end.
Best time is November to February when it's cooler and drier. Avoid March–May if you hate serious heat. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person depending on whether you go with a big group bus tour, a smaller van, or private driver. Private is noticeably better if you can split the cost with friends. Food and entrance fees are usually extra.
Honest tips: Prioritize Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram—these are the strongest. Skip the floating market and railway market add-ons unless you really love touristy markets; they add time in traffic and feel tacked-on. Wear good walking shoes, bring a hat and water, and don't try to see everything. Three or four temples is plenty.
