A bacari wine tour is essentially a guided bar crawl through Venice’s traditional wine bars. You’ll stop at 4–6 small places, drinking local Veneto wines (usually by the glass) paired with cicchetti – those little Venetian snacks like baccala, sardines in saor, or meatballs. The experience is standing up at the counter or outside by the canal with locals, not sitting in fancy restaurants. It’s social, casual, and moves at a relaxed pace. Expect to do a decent amount of walking on uneven stone streets, often in the quieter neighborhoods of Cannaregio or Dorsoduro rather than right next to San Marco.
The best time is spring (April–early June) or fall (mid-September–October). Summers are hot, crowded, and the bars get uncomfortably packed; winter can be chilly and damp but feels more authentic if you don’t mind the rain. Expect to pay around €90–140 per person for a proper tour that includes 5–6 wines, generous cicchetti, and a knowledgeable guide. Private tours or ones with a sommelier push toward the higher end.
Tip: Choose a tour that focuses on bacari with a local crowd rather than the ones aimed purely at tourists – the atmosphere is noticeably better. Skip anything that promises “all you can drink” or includes dinner afterward; it usually means smaller pours and lower quality. Go slightly hungry so you actually enjoy the food, and wear comfortable shoes.
