A balloon ride from Mexico City means an early wake-up call for the hour-long drive to Teotihuacan. You’ll meet the crew well before sunrise, drink some coffee while they inflate the balloon, then float silently over the ancient pyramids as the sun comes up. The flight itself lasts 30-50 minutes. Views are genuinely impressive when the weather cooperates; the pyramids look surprisingly small from above and the surrounding countryside stretches out in every direction. After landing you usually get a small toast with sparkling wine and a basic breakfast. Most tours add an optional ground visit to the archaeological site afterward, which many people find worthwhile if they haven’t been before.
The best months are October through March when winds are calmer and rain is almost nonexistent. December and January are busiest. Expect to pay around $200–$280 per person for a decent shared flight that includes transport from Mexico City, the flight, and basic refreshments. Private balloons cost considerably more. Book a morning-only flight if you just want the balloon experience; skip the full-day packages that tack on a long guided tour of the pyramids if you’re short on time or energy. Bring layers, a hat, and sunglasses; it’s cold at takeoff and warms quickly once the sun rises.
