Punta Cana Beach Horseback Riding: Worth It?

A beach horseback ride in Punta Cana usually lasts 1.5–3 hours and mixes quiet forest trails with time cantering or walking along the sand. Expect calm, well-trained horses matched roughly to your experience level, though they can get lively near the water. The highlight is usually the stretch where you ride in the shallow surf with the Caribbean on one side and palm trees on the other. It’s genuinely pretty but also commercial—groups of 8–20 people are common, and photo stops feel staged. The beach portion is shorter than most photos suggest; plan on more saddle time in the trees than in the waves.

Best time is December through April when it’s drier and slightly cooler. Rainy season (May–November) means muddy trails and afternoon showers that can make the ride slippery and less enjoyable. Expect to pay around $60–$110 per person depending on group size, inclusions like photos or drinks, and whether pickup from your resort is included. Private or semi-private rides sit at the higher end.

Tip: Choose a smaller-group morning ride if you can—it’s cooler, the horses are fresher, and you avoid the big cruise-ship crowds. Skip the add-on “swim with horses” upsells; the animals are usually tired by then and it’s more hassle than it’s worth. Wear long pants, closed shoes, and bring a waterproof phone pouch.
