Expect warm, shallow water with decent visibility on good days and a mix of small fish, coral patches, and sea grass. Most trips head to the Rosario Islands where the better snorkeling is. The experience is more relaxing day-trip than pristine reef adventure: you'll share the water with other boats, see plenty of sergeant majors and parrotfish, but don't expect untouched wilderness. The boat ride itself can be choppy, and afternoons often get windy.
December through April is the dry season and clearly the best time; seas are calmer and visibility is usually better. June to November brings more rain, rougher water, and frequent plankton blooms that reduce visibility. Expect to pay around $45–$80 for a full-day trip including transport, basic snorkel gear, lunch, and a couple of stops. Half-day options run cheaper but feel rushed.
Pick a smaller boat trip that visits at least two snorkel sites and includes beach time; those are worth it. Skip the cheapest pier hawkers and anything that promises “private” for a low price; they usually just herd you onto crowded boats. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them; rental gear is often old and leaks.
