The Belvedere is two Baroque palaces separated by formal gardens on a gentle hill overlooking Vienna. Upper Belvedere holds the main art collection with Klimt's The Kiss as the star, plus a decent range of Austrian and European works from medieval to modern. Lower Belvedere is quieter with temporary exhibitions and nicer staterooms. The gardens are the real highlight for many – perfectly trimmed and great for photos or just wandering. Expect crowds around the Klimt room; the rest of the visit feels calmer. A typical visit takes 1.5–2.5 hours depending on how much art you actually look at.
Best time is spring or early autumn when the gardens look their best and the weather lets you enjoy being outside. Summer gets hot and busy; winter is quieter but the grounds lose appeal. Expect to pay around €25–45 per person total – basic ticket for Upper Belvedere is cheapest, while guided tours with skip-the-line and transfers sit at the higher end. Audio guides are available but many people find them skippable.
Tip: Buy skip-the-line if you're short on time or visiting in peak summer; otherwise regular tickets are fine. Skip the Lower Belvedere unless you're really into temporary shows or palace interiors – focus on Upper plus the gardens instead. Go early morning to avoid the worst of the tour groups.
