Ben Thanh Market: Worth Visiting?

Ben Thanh Market is the loud, crowded heart of Saigon: a massive covered hall packed with stalls selling clothes, silk, souvenirs, coffee, and endless cooked food. Expect aggressive vendors who'll call out to you constantly, narrow aisles full of tourists and locals, and the constant smell of grilled pork and fish sauce. It's chaotic, hot, and very commercial – more theme-park version of a Vietnamese market than an authentic local one. The surrounding streets outside the main building are often more interesting after dark when the night market kicks off with street food stalls.

Best time to visit is early morning (before 9am) when it's cooler and slightly calmer, or after 6pm for the night market vibe. Avoid midday heat between 11am and 4pm. Expect to pay around $15–40 for a basic half-day guided tour if you want someone to navigate the chaos with you; going independently costs nothing beyond transport and what you buy. Food inside runs $2–6 per dish.

Honest tips: Skip the generic tourist souvenirs and overpriced "designer" clothes – the quality is mostly poor. Instead, look for Vietnamese coffee, tea, or small handicrafts. Haggle hard (aim for 40-60% off the first price) but stay friendly. If you're short on time or hate crowds, you can safely skip it and visit a smaller local market instead.
