Renting a bike to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the better ways to experience it. You pedal over the bridge (usually with a decent hill on the way up), then drop down into Sausalito for lunch or coffee before deciding whether to ride back, catch the ferry, or extend into Marin. The ride itself takes 45-90 minutes each way depending on your pace and wind. Expect crowds on the bridge path, especially weekends, strong bay winds, and fog that can make it chilly even in summer. The views are genuinely spectacular on a clear day; on a foggy one it's mostly about the ride and the experience rather than the vista.
Best time is late spring through early fall, ideally midweek to avoid weekend crowds. Mornings tend to have better light and less congestion. Expect to pay around $45-85 for a standard bike for a half-day rental; electric bikes run $20-40 more but make the hills much easier if you're not a regular rider. Add $10-15 for a helmet and lock if not included.
Tip: get an electric bike unless you're confident in your legs; the bridge approach from the city side is steeper than most people expect. Skip trying to ride all the way to Tiburon or Muir Woods on a first trip unless you have a full day and decent fitness; the ferry back from Sausalito is the smarter, more enjoyable option.
