You paddle a two-person kayak for about 30 minutes each way through narrow mangrove tunnels, then reach the open lagoon where every stroke lights up electric-blue from the dinoflagellates. The water glows brightest when you splash or swirl your hand. The whole trip takes roughly 3–4 hours door-to-door from San Juan, including transport. It's genuinely cool on a dark night with no moon, but expect mosquitoes in the mangroves, some group chatter, and the reality that the bay is smaller than the photos suggest. Still worth it if you like paddling and nature at night.
Best time is summer through fall (June–November) on new-moon nights when it's darkest; winter can work but the glow is often weaker and tours get canceled more often due to wind or rain. Expect to pay around $75–110 per person including van transport from San Juan, kayaks, and guide. Private or smaller-group options push toward the higher end.
Pick the standard evening tour that leaves San Juan around 5–6 pm so you’re on the water after full dark. Skip the add-on “swim in the bay” if you don’t like cold water and tiny organisms brushing against you; the real show is from the kayak anyway. Bring bug spray and a waterproof bag for your phone.
