Should You Visit the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is a large, milky-blue geothermal pool set in a lava field about 45 minutes from Reykjavik. Expect warm (around 100°F/38°C) mineral-rich water, steam rising everywhere, and a crowd of several hundred people at peak times. It's more of a spa experience than a wild hot spring: you get a locker, shower, towel, and the option to add a silica mud mask and a drink. The setting is striking but very developed. Most visitors spend 1.5–3 hours there. It's pleasant, but it can feel touristy when busy, especially if you're hoping for a quiet, natural soak.

Best time is winter (November–March) for shorter daylight and fewer crowds in the early morning or late evening slots. Summer is easier for logistics but expect long lines and packed pools. Expect to pay around $70–$120 for standard admission including a drink and mask; add $50–$100+ for transfers from Reykjavik or upgraded packages with food or private changing rooms. Booking months ahead is essential in peak season.

Tip: Choose the earliest or latest slot you can get – the difference in atmosphere is huge. Skip the expensive add-ons like algae masks or dining unless you really want them; the basic package is plenty for most people. If you're short on time or on a tight budget, consider smaller geothermal pools instead.
