Boat Cruises from Edinburgh: Worth It?

A Firth of Forth cruise from Edinburgh gives you a completely different view of the city and its coastline. Expect to spend 45–90 minutes on the water seeing the Forth Bridge (the iconic red one), maybe the rail bridge too, and sometimes Inchcolm Island or seabirds. The ride itself is usually on a medium-sized modern boat with indoor seating and a small outdoor deck. It’s relaxing rather than thrilling – good for photos, decent commentary on history and wildlife, but it can get chilly and windy even in summer. If the weather turns, you’ll be glad you’re not on a tiny open boat.

Best time is May to early September when daylight is long and the sea is usually calmer. June–August has the most sailings but also the biggest crowds. Expect to pay around £25–£45 per adult for a standard sightseeing cruise; longer trips with landing on Inchcolm or evening departures cost more like £50–£70. Families and kids usually get decent discounts.

Pick the simple Three Bridges cruise if you just want the views and bridges – it’s the most reliable option. Skip the very cheapest no-commentary trips; the narration adds useful context. Book ahead in peak season, wear layers, and bring binoculars if you have them. A clear day makes all the difference – check the forecast.
