A Thames boat tour is one of the smartest ways to see London. You get a completely different angle on the city’s landmarks—Big Ben, Tower Bridge, the Shard, and the London Eye all look better from the water. Expect a relaxed ride lasting 30–90 minutes depending on the route. Commentary is usually provided via loudspeaker or headset; some are informative, others are cheesy. It’s a good mix of sightseeing and low-effort transport—many people use it to travel from Westminster to Tower Bridge or Greenwich instead of taking the Tube.
The best time is spring or early autumn. Summer offers long daylight but can be crowded and hot on deck; winter trips run less frequently and you’ll want the covered section. Expect to pay around £15–£28 for a standard sightseeing cruise, more like £40–£65 if it includes a meal or goes as far as the Thames Barrier or Greenwich with return transport. Book ahead in peak season but don’t overpay for “premium” experiences.
Tip: pick a fast Thames Clipper or a straightforward Westminster-to-Tower route if you just want the views without the sales pitch. Skip the dinner cruises unless you really want the novelty—they’re overpriced for the food and you can’t see much at night. Sit on the right-hand side when heading downstream for the best photos.
