A day trip to Boquete from Panama City is doable but tiring. You'll leave around 6-7am and get back after 8pm, spending roughly 5-6 hours in the mountains. Expect a dramatically cooler climate (15-22°C), rolling green hills, coffee plantations, and a much slower pace than the capital. Most tours combine a coffee tour with a short hike to a waterfall or viewpoint. The scenery is genuinely pretty, especially after the Panama City heat, but it's a lot of time in a van. Don't expect to deeply explore; it's more of a greatest-hits sampler.
The best time is December to March when the weather in Boquete is driest and clearest. Avoid the May-November rainy season if possible, though it's still doable. Expect to pay around $90-160 per person including transport, guide, lunch, and one or two activities. Private tours sit at the higher end; shared shuttles with small groups are cheaper.
Pick the coffee tour and a waterfall hike (the Lost Waterfalls trail is solid). Skip the overly touristy flower gardens or butterfly farms unless you really love them; they're skippable. Bring a light jacket, good walking shoes, and cash for extras. If you have more time, consider staying overnight instead; a rushed day trip only gives you a taste.
