Bourbon Street is loud, chaotic, and exactly what you think it will be: a nonstop parade of drunk tourists, blaring music spilling from every doorway, and the smell of beer, piss, and fried food. A typical bar crawl lasts about two hours, hits four spots (mix of dive bars, clubs with live bands, and tourist traps), and includes a couple of shots or a signature drink like a Hurricane. Expect crowds shoulder-to-shoulder after dark, sticky floors, and aggressive hustlers trying to lure you inside. It's fun if you're in the mood to party, but it can feel exhausting and seedy if you're not.
The best time is February through April or October-November when it's cooler and slightly less packed. Avoid summer unless you love sweating through your clothes. Expect to pay around $30-60 per person for an organized crawl that includes the guide, a few drinks or shots, and a souvenir cup. Going solo is cheaper but you'll pay full price for every drink and might waste time at bad venues.
Pick a crawl with a local guide who actually keeps the group moving; it saves you from the worst tourist traps. Skip anything promising "premium" experiences or too many stops; four is plenty. Hydrate, wear comfortable shoes, and know when to call it a night; Bourbon doesn't get better after 1am, it just gets messier.
