The cable car ride in Porto lifts you from the riverside in Gaia up to the top of the hill (or the reverse) in about five minutes. You get wide-open views over the Douro River, the iconic bridges, and the stacked houses of Ribeira. It’s smooth, quiet, and genuinely pretty, especially when the light is soft. Don’t expect thrills – it’s a simple aerial transfer with a photo stop built in. Queues can reach 20-30 minutes on busy weekends; weekdays are noticeably calmer.
Expect to pay around €10–18 for a one-way ticket and €15–25 for a return, depending on whether you buy online in advance or at the ticket machine. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the sweet spots: good weather, fewer crowds than July and August. Winter rides can be atmospheric but cold and sometimes closed in high wind.
Honest tip: just do the one-way trip from the riverside up to the hill and walk back down through the narrow streets – you see more of the city that way and save a few euros. Skip the “combined ticket” with the funicular or boat unless you were already planning to do those; it’s rarely worth the extra money. Go early in the morning if you want the river to yourself.
