The cable car to Urca Hill is a straightforward, efficient way to reach a viewpoint 220 meters up with solid panoramas of Guanabara Bay, Christ the Redeemer, and the city below. You ride two separate cars: the first takes you from the base in Urca to the mid-station on Morro da Urca. From there you can stop for photos, snacks, or a short walk, then catch the second car up to the much higher Sugarloaf peak. The whole ride takes about 20 minutes round-trip if you don’t linger. The cars are enclosed, air-conditioned, and carry quite a few people, so expect company during peak hours. Views are genuinely good on clear days; on hazy or rainy ones they’re mediocre at best.
Best time is early morning (first cars around 8am) during the shoulder seasons (April–May or September–October) when crowds are lighter and the air is clearer. Expect to pay around $25–40 USD per person for a return ticket, with slightly higher rates on weekends and holidays. One honest tip: buy the combo ticket that includes both stages but skip the overpriced cafés at the top and bring your own water and snacks. If you’re reasonably fit, consider hiking the well-marked trail up to Urca Hill instead of taking the first cable car – it’s free, takes 30–40 minutes, and feels far more rewarding before you ride the second leg to Sugarloaf.
