Expect a long day. Most camel rides marketed from Casablanca involve a 3+ hour transfer each way to the Agafay desert or palm groves outside Marrakech. The actual camel portion is usually 30-60 minutes of gentle walking with a handler leading the animal. It's not a deep-desert trek; think photo opportunity with sand dunes or palm trees in the background. Sunset versions add atmosphere but mean getting back to Casablanca very late. The experience is touristy but can still be fun if you like animals and don't mind the drive.
Best time is spring (March-May) or fall (October-November) when it's not brutally hot. Summers are punishing in the desert and winters can be surprisingly cold after sunset. Expect to pay around $100-180 per person for a day trip including transport, camel ride, and basic lunch or dinner. Private options or those with dinner in a desert camp push toward the higher end; shared transfers are cheaper but less comfortable.
Pick a sunset ride if you only want the classic photos and vibe; skip anything promising an “authentic nomadic experience” from Casablanca — it's simply too far. If you're already going to Marrakech, do the camel ride from there instead and save yourself the exhausting round-trip drive. The animals are usually well-behaved but confirm the operator treats them decently if that matters to you.
