Should You Do a Camel Ride from Marrakesh?

A camel ride from Marrakesh is not a desert safari. Most trips take you to the Agafay desert or a similar rocky landscape about an hour away. Expect a 20-40 minute plod on a dromedary, some photo ops, and usually a stop for mint tea or a basic meal. The animals are working camels; they're usually calm but can be grumpy. You'll sit quite high and the gait feels awkward at first. It's a short, touristy experience rather than an epic journey across dunes. Many tours bundle it with quad biking, argan oil visits, or a sunset dinner show, which can make the day feel more substantial.

The best time is October to April when it's not brutally hot. Summer rides can be unpleasant for both you and the camel. Expect to pay around $25-70 per person depending on what's included. Shorter rides with basic transport are at the low end; longer outings with meals, entertainment and pickup from your riad sit higher. Private tours or ones heading further into the Atlas foothills cost more.

Pick a small-group sunset version if you want decent photos and fewer crowds. Skip anything promising "real desert" or multi-day Sahara trips in a single day; those are impossible from Marrakesh.
