Most Nairobi cave experiences are actually guided forest walks that include caves as one stop among waterfalls, monkeys, and canopy bridges. The real outlier is a full-day trip to Mount Elgon's Kitum Cave, several hours away, where you can watch elephants mining salt from the walls at night. Expect muddy paths, basic infrastructure, and guides who vary from excellent to barely interested. The Karura Forest version is an easy half-day that mixes light adventure with city escape; Kitum Cave is a serious commitment involving long drives and national park fees.
Best time is the dry season (June to October or January to February) when trails are less slippery and elephant visits at Kitum are more reliable. Expect to pay around $50–$80 for a half-day Karura tour including transport and guide. The Mount Elgon trip runs $180–$250 per person for a long day that may include other stops. Skip the big-group bus tours that treat caves like a checklist item; try to join a small group or private guide if your budget allows. Bring good shoes and a headlamp even if they say one will be provided.
