Cenote Swimming Day Trips from Mexico City

Most cenote swimming tours from Mexico City are long day trips (10–14 hours total) that combine either Teotihuacan or an overnight in the Yucatán with a stop at one or two cenotes. Expect a very early hotel pickup, a lot of time on a bus or van, and a swim in stunning limestone sinkholes filled with clear, cool water. The actual swimming portion is usually 45–90 minutes; the rest is travel and other activities. The water is refreshingly cold, the light filtering through the ceiling holes is beautiful, and you’ll share the space with plenty of other tourists unless you pay for a private option.

Best time is November through April when it’s drier and less humid in the Yucatán. July–October brings more rain, which can make some open cenotes murky and increases the chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Expect to pay around $120–$220 per person from Mexico City depending on whether it’s a group tour with Teotihuacan, a private tour, or a longer Yucatán package that includes ruins and a cenote swim. Shorter private transfers to closer cenotes are cheaper but still rarely under $180 total.

Pick a tour that focuses on one good open or semi-open cenote rather than rushing through two. Skip the cheapest mass-market tours that pack 40 people into a cenote at the hottest part of the day; they turn the experience into a crowded swimming pool. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes if you have them, and a change of clothes—most tours provide lockers and life vests but the logistics are basic.
