Visiting Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta

Centennial Olympic Park is a large, open downtown space built for the 1996 Games. Expect wide walkways, the big Fountain of Rings that sprays and dances to music every half hour, grassy areas, and the memorial to the Olympic bombing victims. It’s very exposed and paved, so it gets hot and crowded on summer weekends. Kids love running through the fountains; adults usually walk the perimeter, grab photos, and move on within an hour or two. It’s not a quiet nature park — it’s an urban gathering spot with events, food trucks, and often large groups.

Best time to visit is spring (March–May) or fall (September–November) when temperatures are mild and the fountain shows still run. Summer is brutal in the sun; winter is fine but the water features are often closed. Expect to pay around $0–15 per person total — the park itself is free, but you’ll likely spend on parking ($10–20 near downtown), snacks, or a nearby attraction combo ticket if you add the aquarium or World of Coca-Cola.

Pick the early evening fountain show if you have kids or want photos with lights. Skip it on July 4th or during big festivals unless you enjoy shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. Pair it with a short walk to the nearby Center for Civil and Human Rights or a meal in the Gulch instead of eating inside the park — you’ll get better food for the same money.
