Central Market is a big, covered 1930s art-deco building packed with stalls selling batik, souvenirs, handicrafts, snacks, and touristy clothes. Expect crowds, air-conditioning, and a mix of genuine local vendors alongside plenty of mass-produced stuff aimed at visitors. It’s convenient, safe, and easy to reach by monorail or Grab. You can spend 45 minutes to two hours here depending on how much you like browsing or eating. It’s not an authentic wet market — more of a cleaned-up cultural mall with some character left.
Best time is weekday mornings when it’s cooler and less packed; weekends get uncomfortably busy. Avoid peak holiday seasons like Chinese New Year if you dislike crowds. Expect to pay around RM30–80 total per person: a simple lunch or snack runs RM15–25, most small souvenirs and textiles fall between RM10–50, and you can easily leave with a RM100–150 shopping bag if you’re not careful. Bargaining is expected but not aggressive.
Honest tips: pick up locally-made batik scarves or small silver items if you want something decent; the food court on the upper level does solid nasi lemak and roti. Skip the overpriced “traditional” keychains, generic t-shirts, and any stall that immediately calls you “my friend” — there are better places in the city for serious shopping.
