Expect a long day. The drive from Cancun is about 2.5 hours each way, so you’ll spend 5+ hours in a bus or van. Once there you get roughly 2–2.5 hours at the ruins. It’s impressive the first time: the scale of El Castillo and the ball court are genuinely striking, but it gets crowded fast. Most tours add a cenote swim and a basic lunch, turning it into a 10–12 hour trip door-to-door. You’ll be tired by the end.

Best time is November to April when it’s cooler and drier. Avoid July–September if you hate heat and afternoon thunderstorms. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person depending on group size, whether it’s a small van or large bus, and if extras like a better lunch or bilingual guide are included. Private tours push $200+.

Pick a morning departure and a smaller group if you can; you’ll beat the worst crowds and have more time at the site before the vendors and selfie sticks take over. Skip the “light and sound show” add-on and any tour that promises multiple cenotes—you won’t have time for both properly. Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes. If you’re short on time or energy, it’s fine to skip Chichen Itza entirely and visit Tulum or Coba instead.
