Cicchetti Tasting in Venice: Worth It?

Cicchetti are Venice’s version of tapas—small bites of things like fried cod, meatballs, octopus salad, or crostini with anchovies or creamed cod. You stand or perch on stools at a bacaro (tiny bar), order a glass of local wine or spritz, and graze. The experience is casual, loud, and fun if you like standing-room-only bars and chatting with locals or other travelers. It’s not a long sit-down meal; most people hit two or three places in an evening. Expect a lively, slightly chaotic atmosphere rather than refined dining. The best time is spring (April–June) or early fall (September–October) when it’s cooler and the city isn’t quite so packed. Summer evenings can be sweaty and crowded; winter is quieter but some bacari close or have shorter hours.

Expect to pay around €25–45 per person for a satisfying round of 4–6 cicchetti plus two or three drinks, depending on how hungry you are and whether you choose fancy ingredients like fresh seafood. It’s cheaper than a full restaurant dinner and feels more local. Tip one: always look at what’s displayed on the counter and point—freshness varies daily, so pick what looks good rather than sticking to a menu. Skip anything that looks like it’s been sitting out too long, especially in hot weather. Second tip: start in Cannaregio or near the Rialto market area instead of San Marco to avoid the worst tourist traps. Go early (around 5:30–6:30 pm) before the after-work crowd fills every spot.
