Panama City Sightseeing Tour: Worth It?

A city sightseeing tour in Panama City usually means a double-decker hop-on hop-off bus that loops through the modern financial district, past the old quarter of Casco Viejo, and along the waterfront. Expect sweeping views from the open top deck, recorded commentary in several languages, and the ability to get off and on at major stops like the Biomuseo, Cinta Costera, or Albrook Mall. The full loop takes roughly 90 minutes without stops. It's an easy, low-effort way to get your bearings on a first visit, especially if you're short on time or don't want to navigate taxis and heat all day. That said, traffic can be heavy, and the narration is fairly basic.

The best time to do this is during the dry season from mid-December to April when you're far less likely to get caught in a tropical downpour on the open deck. Expect to pay around $25–45 for a 24-hour ticket; multi-day passes push the upper end. One solid tip: buy the ticket that includes the Casco Viejo walking tour option if it's offered – it's the most interesting part of the city and much better experienced on foot with a live guide than from a moving bus. Skip the full-day package if you're staying longer than a couple of days; you'll get more out of exploring the areas independently once you know the layout.
