Comic Book Trail in Brussels: Worth It?

Brussels has turned its love of comic books into a city-wide open-air gallery. The main experience is a self-guided comic strip trail that takes you through the city centre to see 70+ large murals painted on building walls. Expect a mix of colourful, nostalgia-filled art featuring Tintin, Smurfs, Spirou, and local heroes. A guided walking tour adds context about Belgium's comic history and takes 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace. It's mostly outdoors, so you'll be walking on cobbled streets, looking up at walls between cafés and shops. The trail is free and flexible; guided versions give structure if you want someone to explain the cultural importance.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when the weather is decent and daylight lasts longer. Summer can get warm, but the streets are lively. Expect to pay around €15–25 for a guided group tour. A self-guided walk costs nothing beyond your time and maybe a coffee stop. Skip trying to hunt every single mural – many are scattered in less interesting backstreets. Pick the central cluster instead (around Rue des Bouchers and nearby) and combine it with a visit to the Comic Book Museum if you want depth. Wear comfortable shoes; the charm wears off quickly if your feet hurt.
