Expect warm, clear water and a genuinely impressive amount of marine life even on beginner-friendly reefs. A typical half-day trip from Malé or a resort takes you to two or three different spots, each with its own character—some shallow gardens packed with colorful fish, others with more dramatic drops where you might see rays, turtles, or the occasional reef shark. The snorkeling itself is easy; most sites are protected and currents are usually mild, but you’ll be swimming between boat and reef so basic comfort in the water is essential. Visibility is routinely 15–30 meters outside the rainy season.
The best time is December to April when seas are calmer and visibility is highest. June to October brings cheaper prices and fewer crowds but also more rain, stronger currents, and lower visibility; it’s still perfectly doable if you’re on a budget. Expect to pay around $50–$90 for a half-day trip from Malé including gear and lunch, or $30–$60 if booked directly through a resort or liveaboard. Full-day excursions or seaplane trips push toward $150+.
Pick a small-group boat that visits fewer, less-crowded reefs rather than the cheapest mass tour that herds 30 people onto the same house reef. Skip the trips that advertise “guaranteed sharks and mantas”—nature doesn’t work that way and the pressure often leads to disappointed crowds and stressed guides. Bring your own mask if you have a good fit; rental gear is usually fine but masks can leak.
