Craft Market Shopping in Nairobi

Nairobi's craft markets range from the busy open-air Maasai Market that rotates locations to smaller city-center spots packed with carvings, jewelry, textiles, and Maasai beadwork. Expect enthusiastic vendors who start prices high and expect bargaining – it's a lively, sometimes chaotic experience with crowds, dust or mud depending on the weather, and a lot of repetition as you walk past near-identical stalls. The good ones feel energetic and colorful; the bad ones can be tiring with persistent sales pitches. A half-day visit gives you enough time without burning out.

The best time is the dry season from June to October or January to February when it's easier to walk around without rain turning grounds into mud. Expect to pay around $10-40 for most souvenirs – simple beaded bracelets or small carvings at the low end, larger wooden sculptures or quality leather goods toward the higher end after bargaining. A guided shopping trip typically runs $40-70 per person including transport.

Pick well-made Maasai beadwork, baskets, or contemporary Kenyan art if you want something authentic that will last. Skip the mass-produced wooden animals and "antique" masks that are clearly made for tourists – the quality is poor and you'll find the same thing cheaper elsewhere. Always decide your maximum price before you start haggling and be prepared to walk away.
