A day trip to Can Tho from Ho Chi Minh City means leaving around 7am and getting back after 7pm. You'll spend about three hours each way on the bus, which is fine if you don't mind sitting. Once there, the main draw is the floating market at Cai Rang – noisy, busy with boats selling fruit and noodles, and genuinely interesting for the first 30-45 minutes. After that it becomes mostly tourist boats circling the same area. The town itself has a decent riverside promenade and a big covered market if you want to walk around, but it's not a highlight compared to the delta experience.
Best time to go is December to March when it's dry and slightly cooler. Avoid the wet season peak (June-October) unless you like heavy rain and very green but muddy scenery. Expect to pay around $80-130 per person for a small-group tour that includes transport, guide, boat ride through the market, and lunch. Private tours sit at the higher end; basic shared ones can dip lower but often feel more rushed.
Tip: choose a tour that reaches the floating market before 8:30am – that's when it's most active with local traders. Skip the “village visits” and coconut candy workshops that usually follow; they're mostly souvenir stops. If you're short on time or energy, a two-day overnight version is often more relaxed than cramming everything into one long day.
