A half-day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels takes you about 1.5 hours northwest of Ho Chi Minh City through flat countryside and rubber plantations. Once there you walk around a preserved section of the tunnel network used by Viet Cong fighters. Guides demonstrate the original tiny entrances, booby traps, and underground living areas; you'll usually get the chance to crawl through a short, widened section (it's hot, dark, and claustrophobic). The site also has firing ranges where you can pay extra to shoot vintage AK-47s or M16s. Expect a fairly touristy experience with groups moving together, souvenir stalls, and a slightly sanitized presentation of brutal history. It's interesting if you're into wartime engineering or Vietnam War history, but can feel rushed and commercial.
Best time to go is the dry season (December to April) when the ground is firmer and temperatures are slightly more bearable. Expect to pay around $15–35 per person for a half-day tour including transport and guide; add another $10–20 if you want the Mekong Delta combo. Private car or Grab both ways will run $70–110 total. Tip: skip the shooting range unless you're genuinely excited by guns; the tunnels themselves are the real reason to come. If your time is short, do Cu Chi by itself in the morning rather than bolting on the Mekong in one exhausting day.
